 2012 wordt wellicht een doorslaggevend jaar voor de Cuban Five. Het is het laatste jaar van de eerste presidentstermijn van Obama. Via internationale actie is reeds heel wat bereikt. Verschillende regeringsleiders en politieke personaliteiten hebben Obama persoonlijk aangesproken rond de zaak van de Vijf. Er is internationaal een beweging van intellectuelen en artiesten die hun zaak steunt, onder hen namen als Rigoberta Menchu, Günther Grass, Noam Chomsky, Danny Glover, Oliver Stone, Susan Sarandon, Martin Sheen, Ed Asner, Benicio del Toro,… Ook in ons land groeit de steun. Er was de resolutie van de commissie buitenlandse zaken van de senaat, de breed gesteunde protestactie voor de VS-ambassade op 12 september en de grote actie op 24 september waarbij 4670 handafdrukken verzameld werden onder de oproep Obama Free the Five, yes you can.
Op elke vijfde van de maand vertrekken er vele honderden e-mails naar Obama met de vraag om vrijheid van de Vijf. Niet alleen vanuit België maar wereldwijd.
Binnenkort gaan we een Engels ondertiteld videoverslag van de actie van 24 september overhandigen op de VS-ambassade te Brussel. We zullen daartoe een audiëntie aanvragen bij de ambassadeur.
We willen dat videoverslag afgeven samen met een begeleidende brief aan president Obama. U vindt de brief in bijlage. We zouden u willen vragen of we ook uw naam onder deze brief kunnen vermelden.
Verder wil ik u ook vragen of u eventueel mee zou willen gaan op deze audiëntie. Het is nu nog niet duidelijk wanneer die afspraak zal vallen. We zullen u zo gauw mogelijk daarvan verwittigen, zodat u eventueel uw beschikbaarheid kan nagaan.

Dear Mister President,
We are very concerned about the case of the Cuban Five. These five Cuban patriots – Gerardo
Hernández, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and Rene González –were
arrested on September 12, 1998 in Miami. They were sentenced to incredibly long prison terms.
They were gathering information about plans for terrorist attacks on their country, set up by
organizations based in Miami, FL, and passing it on to their government. They were not armed and
they did not do any harm to anybody. They tried to save lives from terrorist actions.
During the court proceedings a number of irregularities took place, some of which were connected
to the charges. The Commission on Illegal Detention of the UN Human Rights Council, Amnesty
International in their report titled 'The Case of the Cuban Five', and many other famous organizations
have demanded the release of the Cuban Five. Three consecutive Belgian ministers of Foreign Affairs,
Karel De Gucht, Yves Leterme, and Steven Vanackere, have spoken out for the immediate release
of the Cuban Five. Together with them we ask you to practice your constitutional power to give
Gerardo Hernández, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando González back their freedom
and to let Rene González return to his family in Cuba. Currently René is forced to remain in Florida
for the three years of his parole, even though he has no family in Florida and his life is in danger from
the terrorist groups he helped to infiltrate.
On September 24, 2011, during ManiFiesta, a festival for solidarity, 4760 hand prints were collected
under the demand : President Obama, free the Five. That number of hand prints reflected the
number of days that the Cuban Five had been unjustly incarcerated in the US at the time of the
event. It is a call of the Belgian people to make an end to the injustice against the Cuban Five and
their families. Together with this letter we deliver a video report and a photo of this action.
We kindly request you to take into account our concerns and issue Executive Clemency for the Cuban
Five, so that they can soon return to their families.
